Well Water Test Kit | EPA-Certified Methods | KETOS KELP

45 million Americans rely on private wells with zero federal oversight. Test yours.

Private Well Owners

Well Water Test Kit
Because No One Else is checking.

Private well owners have zero federal oversight. The EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act does not apply to you. No utility. No annual inspections. No federal testing. A well water test kit is the only way to know what's in your water.

EPA-certified methods, same as used by state agencies

Three things city water drinkers
don't have to worry about, but you do

⚠️
45 million Americans rely on private wells.

If you're one of them, no government agency is required to monitor your water. The CDC recommends testing your well at least once a year. Most owners have never tested at all.

🚫

Zero Federal Oversight

The EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act explicitly excludes private wells serving fewer than 25 people. Your local health department may offer voluntary testing, but no one is coming to check. Compliance is entirely voluntary.

Contaminants Unique to Wells

City water is treated. Well water comes straight from the aquifer and picks up whatever the geology and your neighbors put into it. Arsenic, nitrates from agriculture, iron, manganese, and heavy metals are common in well water and completely undetectable by taste or smell.

📅

Wells Change Over Time

A well that tested clean in 2018 may not be clean today. Heavy rainfall, flooding, agricultural runoff, aging infrastructure, and seasonal variation all affect groundwater quality. One-time testing gives false reassurance. Annual testing is the standard of care.

Americans Rely on Private Wells Source: CDC, 2022
Approximately 23 million U.S. households (about 45 million people) use private wells as their primary drinking water source.

Private Wells Exceed at Least One Safety Threshold Source: USGS, 2021
A USGS study of untreated well water found that about 23% of domestic wells had at least one constituent at a concentration of potential health concern, including arsenic, nitrate, and uranium.

What lurks in well water

These are the six categories of concern for private well owners. All are undetectable without lab testing.

Nitrates & Nitrites Common in agricultural areas and near septic systems. Particularly dangerous for infants under 6 months: causes "blue baby syndrome" (methemoglobinemia). Tasteless and odorless.
Arsenic Naturally occurring in rock formations across the US (especially Northeast, Midwest, and Southwest). Linked to skin, bladder, and lung cancers with long-term exposure. No taste or odor.
Lead & Heavy Metals Can leach from older well casings or pipes. Lead has no safe level of exposure for children and damages neurological development. Also test for arsenic, mercury, copper, and cadmium.
Iron, Manganese & Hardness High iron and manganese cause staining, metallic taste, and damage appliances. Manganese is linked to neurological effects at high levels. Hard water damages water heaters and reduces soap effectiveness.
pH & Corrosivity Low pH water (acidic) corrodes pipes and fixtures, leaching lead and copper into your water. High pH causes scale buildup. Well water pH varies significantly by geology and should be checked annually.

Well Water Testing QUESTIONS

Private wells should be tested annually for nitrates and nitrites (especially if you have infants or are pregnant), pH (affects pipe corrosion and metal leaching), and hardness (calcium and magnesium).

Every 3–5 years, or any time you notice changes in taste, color, or odor, test for a broader panel including heavy metals (lead, arsenic, manganese, iron) and inorganic compounds like fluoride and sulfates. After flooding or nearby construction, test immediately.

Note: KELP tests for chemical contaminants. For biological testing (bacteria, E. coli), contact your local health department or county extension office, as that requires a separate microbial test.

No. The EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act explicitly does not cover private wells. If your home is served by a private well, not a municipal water system, no federal agency is required to test or monitor your water quality.

Some states have voluntary testing programs or testing requirements when buying/selling a home, but ongoing monitoring is your responsibility. The CDC recommends testing at least once per year.

The CDC recommends annual testing for nitrates, pH, and heavy metals at minimum. Test more frequently, or immediately, if:

• There has been flooding or heavy rainfall near your well
• You notice changes in water taste, color, or odor
• A new baby joins the household
• Your well is near agricultural land, industrial sites, or a septic system

A well that tested clean five years ago may not be clean today. Groundwater conditions change with seasons, land use, and infrastructure age.

Home test strips cannot detect arsenic, nitrates at health-relevant concentrations, or heavy metals at parts-per-billion levels. They give a rough indication of pH and chlorine, not the chemical contaminants that pose the greatest health risk in well water.

For well water chemical safety, EPA-certified methods are the only reliable approach. Strips give a false sense of security for the contaminants that matter most, the ones you can't see, smell, or taste.

Your digital report includes clear pass/fail indicators for each parameter compared to EPA health guidelines, along with specific, actionable recommendations based on your results.

If contamination is detected, the report will guide you on: the right type of filtration system for your specific contaminant(s), whether to contact your local health department or well contractor, and interim steps to reduce exposure while you address the issue.

For buyers and sellers who need a certified potable water check for a real estate transaction, the Real Estate Well Water package ($199) covers 10 metals plus full water chemistry: 18 parameters, meeting most lender and state requirements.

For homeowners who live on the property and want ongoing protection, the Home Safety Screen ($549) adds 18 PFAS compounds on top of the Real Estate panel, covering the "forever chemicals" that no real estate test includes.

The Ultimate Water Safety Suite ($699) is for well owners near industrial or military sites, anyone buying a home with unknown history, or anyone who wants the most complete picture available: 25 PFAS compounds plus the full toxic metals suite.
